Serving with a Purpose
Today, I came across a picture of our Tribal Council from 1983–1984. As I looked at the faces in that photo, one stood out to me in a special way—my dad, Alex “Jody” Martin, serving alongside other leaders during an important time in our Tribe’s history.
Underneath the photo were the words:
“The Road to Sovereignty”
Those words carry weight.
Because that generation of leaders was not serving for recognition or personal gain. They were serving with a shared purpose—a vision greater than themselves.
They understood the importance of fighting for the future of our people and securing the sovereignty that many of us benefit from today.
A Shared Mission
As I reflected on that photo and the memorandum recognizing the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, I couldn’t help but think about the sacrifices, conversations, and determination it took to reach that moment in history.
Those leaders came together around a common purpose.
They may not have always agreed on every detail, but they understood the bigger mission:
- Protecting our people
- Preserving our identity
- Securing recognition
- Building a future for the next generation
That sense of shared purpose helped carry our Tribe forward during one of the most important periods in our history.
Lessons for Today
Looking at where we are today, I believe there is something important we can learn from that generation.
Strong communities are built when people come together around something bigger than themselves.
Not around division.
Not around personalities.
But around purpose.
I believe one of the greatest opportunities we have today is to reconnect around a shared vision for the future of our Tribe.
A vision centered on:
- Unity
- Leadership
- Opportunity
- Cultural preservation
- Preparing the next generation
Preparing Future Leaders
As I’ve shared before, one of my biggest concerns is who will be leading our Tribe in the next 5–10 years.
That preparation starts now.
We need to continue investing in our youth, developing future leaders, and creating opportunities for the next generation to grow, serve, and carry forward the responsibilities entrusted to us.
Because sovereignty is not just something that was achieved in the past—it is something that must continue to be protected and strengthened for the future.
Carrying Forward the Legacy
Seeing my dad in that photo reminded me that leadership is ultimately about service.
Service with humility.
Service with commitment.
And service with purpose.
I am thankful for the leaders who came before us and the foundation they built through sacrifice, perseverance, and faith in the future of our Tribe.
Their legacy lives on through each of us.
Moving Forward Together
My hope is that we continue moving forward together under a shared purpose once again.
Not forgetting where we came from.
Not taking for granted what was built.
And not losing sight of the responsibility we now carry for future generations.
Because the road to sovereignty did not end in 1984.
In many ways, it continues today.
And it is now our responsibility to carry it forward.
