You Cannot Break People Who Get Their Strength from Their Ancestors”
I recently came across a quote that stayed with me:
“You cannot break people who get their strength from their ancestors.”
The more I reflected on those words, the more I realized how deeply they connect to who we are as a Tribe.
Because our strength has never come from comfort or convenience.
Our strength comes from those who came before us.
Strength Passed Down Through Generations
As Tribal Citizens, we carry a history filled with resilience, perseverance, sacrifice, and survival.
Our ancestors endured hardships many could never imagine. They faced adversity, displacement, uncertainty, and attempts to erase their identity and culture.
Yet they remained strong.
They stood firm in who they were.
They protected their people.
And they carried forward traditions, values, and beliefs that continue to shape us today.
Because of them, we are still here.
Carrying the Legacy Forward
When I think about leadership, I often think about responsibility.
Not just responsibility to the present—but responsibility to the generations before us and those still to come.
We are beneficiaries of the sacrifices made by our ancestors.
That means we also have a responsibility to carry that legacy forward with honor, humility, and commitment.
That responsibility includes:
- Protecting our sovereignty
- Preserving our culture and history
- Staying connected as a community
- Preparing future generations to lead
- Continuing to strengthen our Tribe for those who come after us
Remembering Where Our Strength Comes From
There will always be challenges.
There will always be moments that test communities, leaders, and individuals.
But I believe there is something powerful about remembering where we come from.
When you know the sacrifices that were made for your existence…
When you understand the perseverance of those before you…
When you carry their stories, values, and spirit with you…
It creates a kind of strength that cannot easily be shaken.
A Legacy Bigger Than Ourselves
Growing up in Poarch, I learned early on the importance of community, family, accountability, and respect.
Those lessons didn’t come from books—they came from people. From elders. From parents and grandparents. From individuals who understood what it meant to work hard, stand together, and protect the community around them.
Their impact lasts far beyond their lifetime.
That is legacy.
Committed to Continuing the Work
One of my greatest commitments is to continue carrying forward the legacy that was entrusted to us.
Not just by words, but through action.
By staying involved.
By serving with purpose.
By protecting what matters.
And by helping prepare future generations to continue the work long after we are gone.
Because the decisions we make today will one day become part of the story future generations tell about us.
Moving Forward Together
The quote says:
“You cannot break people who get their strength from their ancestors.”
I believe that wholeheartedly.
Our history gives us perspective.
Our culture gives us identity.
And our ancestors give us strength.
That strength lives on through each generation willing to continue carrying the legacy forward.
And that responsibility is something worth honoring.
