Raising the Standard: Preserving Our Heritage, Strengthening Our Connections, and Preparing the Next Generation

Over the past several months, I have shared many thoughts, reflections, and experiences through these blogs. Some have focused on leadership, others on sovereignty, community involvement, workforce development, family, culture, and the lessons passed down by those who came before us.

While the topics have varied, the message has remained consistent.

Everything comes back to three simple ideas:

Preserving Our Heritage

Our Tribe exists today because of the sacrifices, perseverance, and leadership of those who came before us.

From our ancestors who endured unimaginable hardships, to the leaders who fought for Federal Recognition and sovereignty, each generation has played a role in securing the future we enjoy today.

We have a responsibility to honor that legacy by protecting our sovereignty, preserving our culture and history, and ensuring future generations understand where they came from.

The road to sovereignty did not end with previous generations. It is now our responsibility to carry that legacy forward.

Strengthening Our Connections

One of the greatest strengths of our community has always been our connection to one another.

Growing up in Poarch, I learned that neighbors looked after one another, families supported each other, and the community came together during both celebrations and challenges.

As our Tribe grows, it becomes even more important that we remain connected.

That means:

• Open communication
• Transparency and accountability
• Grassroots involvement
• Community engagement
• Ensuring both local and out-of-area Tribal Citizens feel included and informed

Having lived away from home for nearly twenty years, I understand firsthand the importance of staying connected. Every Tribal Citizen deserves to feel part of the conversation and part of the future of our Tribe.

Preparing the Next Generation

Perhaps the most important question we should be asking ourselves is:

Who will lead our Tribe in the next 5 to 10 years?

The answer to that question depends on what we do today.

We must continue investing in our youth, workforce development, leadership training, financial literacy, and career readiness. We have talented young people throughout our community who are eager for opportunities to learn, grow, and lead.

Preparing future leaders is not simply a workforce issue—it is a responsibility.

Strong communities develop leaders before they need them.

Moving Forward Together

As I reflect on everything I have written, one thought continues to stand out:

The future of our Tribe will not be determined by any one individual.

It will be determined by our willingness to work together around a shared purpose.

A purpose rooted in honoring our past, strengthening our community today, and preparing future generations for tomorrow.

That is what “Raising the Standard” means to me.

Not expecting more from others, but expecting more from ourselves.

Serving with purpose.

Leading with integrity.

Staying connected.

And never forgetting the sacrifices that made our future possible.

Together, we can continue building a Tribe that honors its heritage, strengthens its people, and prepares the next generation to carry the legacy forward.
